The benefits of stress reduction are invaluable. The effects of too much stress include emotional outbursts, poor physical health, disease and mental illness. And while some stress in life is unavoidable, we can reduce our stress levels simply by slowing down. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by stress anxiety, contact a counseling center right away. Here are some other tips for slowing down to reduce stress:
1. Allow yourself more time than you think is necessary to complete a task. Instead of allowing yourself 30 minutes to get ready for work in the morning, for example, schedule a full hour so you don’t feel rushed.
2. Stimulate your parasympathetic nervous system. When the sympathetic nervous system is aroused, it puts us on high alert. This is necessary for our survival. When the parasympathetic nervous system is stimulated, it produces a feeling of relaxation and calmness. To do this, breathe deeply from your diaphragm and practice mindfulness. Calmly rest your attention on what is happening in the present moment.
3. Aim for less multitasking. It can be efficient, but too much sensory input increases stress levels.
